While it may not seem like it now, dead in the middle of the Conference Finals in the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Las Vegas Golden Knights and their first season in the National Hockey League remain one of the most shocking stories in the recent history of North American professional sports. The Golden Knights are currently in the middle of what may go down as the most unbelievable Cinderella runs in the history of the National Hockey League but that may not even be the biggest story that will surround the team in the coming months.
The Golden Knights are likely headed into some drastic offseason changes this summer due to the fact that so many of the players on their roster will either be unrestricted free agents or restricted free agents at the end of the season. That however may not be the only drastic changes that the Golden Knights make this summer and in fact after an insane run into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in their inaugural season the Golden nights may be looking to shock the hockey world once again.
On Tuesday TSN insider Darren Dreger was a guest on TSN's 1050 radio in Toronto when he was asked about whether or not he felt the Las Vegas Golden Knights would once again be a top 10 team in the National Hockey League for the 2018-2019 NHL regular season. Dreger not only indicated that he believes they will be, but also pointed to a potentially blockbuster move from general manager George McPhee, a move that would bring one of the biggest stars in the NHL to Las Vegas.
“Well, you’re right. Obviously there’s going to be changes based on some of their pending unrestricted free agents,” noted Dreger as per Fanrag's Chris Nichols. “But what if all of the sudden they become big game hunters in the offseason. What if George McPhee takes a swing at John Tavares. And I’m not so sure that John Tavares wouldn’t consider going to Vegas. Why wouldn’t he.
Tavares is of course still technically a member of the New York Islanders but as the days go buy without news of a contract extension being negotiated between the player and the team it seems less and less likely that he will return to that organization next season. There's no doubt that there will be plenty of competition for his services but if you see what the Golden Knights have been able to build in just a single season would that not appeal to you as a star player? A team with very limited star power became one of the best in the league, the addition of a bonafide star could propel them to the very top of the NHL's pecking order.
Tavares may not be the only huge name on George McPhee's radar however. We heard at the trade deadline that the Las Vegas Golden Knights made a last minute push to acquire Ottawa Senators' superstar defenseman Erik Karlsson, and Dreger seems to think it may happen again.
“Now if you were able, in this dream world, to land John Tavares as a free agent and then make a deal for Erik Karlsson,” chuckled Dreger, “I think that puts them in pretty good form again for contending for another Stanley Cup.
