Big news from the league.

The National Hockey League is finally officially set to begin the 2021 season and with that proclamation today has come a number of official announcements as well.

I'm going to get right to it, the biggest one thus far is unquestionably the official reveal of the league's 4 new divisions all of which will feature new names that have a very old school type of feel to them. The NHL has announced that this year the league will see competition in the North, West, Central and East divisions with those aligning very much geographically with the teams that have been placed in each division.

Here is a break down of the 4 new divisions:

North.

Calgary Flames

Edmonton Oilers

Montreal Canadiens

Ottawa Senators

Toronto Maple Leafs

Winnipeg Jets

Vancouver Canucks

West.

Anaheim Ducks

Arizona Coyotes

Colorado Avalanche

Los Angeles Kings

Minnesota Wild

San Jose Sharks

St. Louis Blues

Las Vegas Golden Knights

Central.

Carolina Hurricanes

Chicago Blackhawks

Columbus Blue Jackets

Dallas Stars

Detroit Red Wings

Florida Panthers

Nashville Predators

Tampa Bay Lightning

East.

Boston Bruins

Buffalo Sabres

New Jersey Devils

New York Islanders

New York Rangers

Philadelphia Flyers

Pittsburgh Penguins

Washington Capitals

My first thought upon seeing these divisions is that the league has done a pretty good job of splitting up the teams given the rather impossible circumstances that they have been forced into. For rivalries like that shared between the Flyers and the Penguins or Oilers and Flames it will no doubt prove to be amazing for both the fans and the league's television partners, but unfortunately other rivalries like that shared between the Bruins and the Habs or the one between the Blackhawks and Wild will have to be sidelined for at least the duration of an entire regular season.

Thankfully even in those cases the teams will have a chance to meet in the playoffs, but they will have to survive fierce competition during what will no doubt be a grueling schedule to get there.
