There is a major scandal brewing in Ottawa and while it's probably not going away anytime soon we are already getting a much clear picture of what is likely going on behind the scenes over there.
On Tuesday a stunning report revealed that Melinda Karlsson, the wife of Ottawa Senators superstar defenseman Erik Karlsson, was pursuing legal action against a woman named Monika Caryk for extensive harassment. The reason this has blown up into a major scandal in the hockey world is that Monika Caryk happens to be the long time girlfriend of Ottawa Senators forward Mike Hoffman, a long time teammate of Karlsson's.
The news has shocked the hockey world due to the heinous nature of the accusations being leveled at Caryk, accusations that suggest she has spent several months harassing Karlsson's wife. Melinda Karlsson made a sworn statement in court as she sought an order of protection against Caryk and they paint a very dark picture of her alleged behavior.
“Monika Caryk has uttered numerous statements wishing my unborn child dead,” said Melinda Karlsson.
“She also uttered that she wished I was dead and that someone should ‘take out’ my husband’s legs to ‘end his career.’
“Monika Caryk has posted over 1,000 negative and derogatory statements about me as a professional.”
If you're anything like me your initial reaction to these claims was likely a healthy dose of skepticism, I mean after all would a man like Hoffman really stay with a woman that was engaged in this type of behavior? Especially when it could be so damaging to his career? It has to be said that at the time these are still accusations, but new evidence has now started to dispel my skepticism and is now making me more and more of a believer.
Not one but two people with strong ties to the Senators organization have now come out and made comments that seem to heavily support Melinda's side of the story here, and considering that they are no longer affiliated with the Senators organization they seem like rather credible sources on this matter.
Julie Turris the wife of former Ottawa Senators forward Kyle Turris made the following statement:
This crossed the line from cyber bullying to something entirely different in April. Unfortunate that this private matter has become public. Incredibly proud of my girl for standing up for herself and her family, it took courage.
She's not alone in her support of Melinda Karlsson either, the wife of former Ottawa Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond referred to the story as well as the allegations against Hoffman's fiance as "unsurprising."
This is still not evidence of Caryk's guilt, however it's a bad sign for both her and Hoffman that multiple sources seem to be corroborating Melinda Karlsson's version of events. What's even more disturbing though is that their reactions seem to indicate that this behavior is what they would expect from Hoffman's fiance, a fiance that Hoffman is currently defending.
“There is a 150 per cent chance that my fianceé Monika and I are not involved in any of the accusations that have been pursued (that are) coming our way," said Hoffman on Tuesday. “We totally understand there’s no place for cyberbullying.”
A very strange and disturbing story and one that is far from over.
