The Toronto Maple Leafs have just been rejected in a major way.
There is a strong belief that the Toronto Maple Leafs have been trying desperately to acquire an additional weapon on the blue line for head coach Mike Babcock to add to his arsenal, and they certainly have been trying to make that a reality.
Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs there are sometimes unforeseen circumstances that make things considerably more difficult than they would appear to be from the outside, and it appears that one of those unfortunate scenarios is exactly what has left the Leafs empty handed today, at least so far.
According to a breaking news report from TSN producer Jeremy Collins, Detroit Red Wings star defenseman Mike Green has refused to waive his no-trade clause for a trade that would send him to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The details surrounding this would-be trade deal are unclear at this time, but it doesn't really matter if you're the Maple Leafs or the Red Wings, the end result remains serious disappointment.
For the Maple Leafs they lose out on the opportunity to acquire a stud offensive-minded defenseman, one who could serve as a quarterback for their power-play unit during the remains of the regular season as well as for the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup playoffs. As for the Red Wings they, at least so far, will get no return for Mike Green in the deal, a return that likely would have helped them moving forward into the future.
The deal would have seen Detroit Red Wings' general manager Ken Holland helping out his former head coach in Mike Babcock, but unfortunately Green has a full no-trade clause and has full control of his destiny today as a result of that clause.
Stay tuned for more details.
